Layered Christmas Card With Watercolor Wreath

Today's project is a layered Christmas card with a watercolor wreath. The deep red poinsettias are accented with glitter glue stems and foiled paper holly at the corners. Layers of red and grey cardstock are the perfect setting for this seasonal wish.

The first step with this card is to emboss, die-cut, and paint the wreath. Watercolors dry quickly, but the glitter glue accents will need to sit much longer.

The center piece of cardstock is 3.25 x 5.25". The corners are detailed with a holly punch and the sentiment is placed at the center. Gold pigment ink is layered with gold embossing powder and then heat embossed.

 A rectangle of emerald green foiled paper lines the back of the center piece. Best Glue Ever holds the foil secure.

 The center of the holly punches are decorated with red glitter glue.

 The card base is 4 x 6" topped with a 3.75 x 5.75" rectangle of striped cardstock. Best Glue Ever holds these pieces together without a wrinkle.

 The top piece is added with scant amounts of super strong Best Glue Ever.

 When all is secure and dry, a thin ring of Best Glue Ever holds down the wreath.

Scattering Holiday Cheer with Kreaxions' Snowflake Punch

The last week before winter break is such a hurry scurry of school events. Parent-teacher conferences, choir concerts, and exams jockey with shopping, baking, and holiday plans. It was no surprise that my eldest rushed down the stairs this morning exclaiming, "Mom, Mom, I need Christmas cards for all my teachers!!!" I knew I needed a quick, cute, and easy to reproduce design, not to mention limited to supplies on hand.

Christmas Joy

Today's post is a Christmas card I designed for a Professor friend. He loves all things literary and is invited various places to give talks on his favorite authors. A dragon with a horde of books seems to fit him exactly!

This card is constructed with layer upon layer of stamping, embossing, rub-ons, and cardstock. To begin with I cut the Red Glitter Paisley Cardstock to a little less than 5x7. I stamped the dragon in black pigment ink, dusted it with sparkling black powder, and heat embossed it. This process curled the paper heavily but I knew more embossing was on the way so I didn't let it bother me.

The only book stamp I have is a stack of three books so I dipped it in pigment ink and stamped and gold embossed repeatedly on the card. I tried to stack the books up, but the process was a bit haphazard.

The edges of the red paper were rather ink smeared by the time I was finished with the book stamp. I trimmed an 1/8 inch off the sides and a 1/4 inch off the bottom. This gave the impression of even more books, just out of sight.

I layered the dragon on top of the Wedding Cut-Outs Cardstock and the Snow Covered Trees Cardstock so that each layer had an 1/8 inch rim showing and the card fit a 5x7 card blank and envelope. 

With as much embossing as I had done the red cardstock was rather warped. I reheated it from the other side to smooth it out, then stitched all the layers together. The stitching gives the red cardstock a visual frame. It also provides a secure hold for all those layers.

To add the Christmas flavor to the card I used the Christmas Rub-On sheet. I cut the holly garland so that I could add it to the top of the card in a line rather than the corner shape offered.

I inked the edge of the card to give it just a tad bit more definition.

My final step for this card was a sentiment, also from the Christmas Rub-On Sheet. I added it to a strip of the Wedding Cut-Outs Cardstock. I used a corner punch on the end and inked the edges, then adhered it to the card front.

As with any handmade card the best part is the inside inscription. I hope for many years of friendship with my literary friend and many more handmade cards sent off to Mexico!

Kreaxions has such lovely two-sided papers, sized perfectly for card making. I created this card to display those papers and show how easy it is too incorporate both sides in a design.

Cutting and Punching Diagram
Step 1) Cut a piece of two-sided cardstock 5.5" long and 5" tall.
 Step 2) Draw a horizontal line 0.5" down from the top.
Step 3) Mark the cardstock 2.25" from the right side, on the line.  

Step 4) Make additional marks at the bottom of the paper 0.75" from the right and 3.75" from the right.
Step 5) Use a ruler to draw a straight line through the mark at the top and the 0.75" mark at the bottom. 

Step6) Use the ruler again for the mark at the top and the 3.75" mark at the bottom. 

This will create a triangular shape for the tree.

Decorate the Tree

Fold the tree along the right and left triangle sides. 

To decorate your tree use the Kreaxions Circle Cutter set at various widths.

Set the point of the circle cutter at the intersection of the lines at the top of the tree. Begin the cut at the fold mark and cut away from the tree to the edge of the cardstock.
Cut 3", 6", and 8" partial circles on the left side of the tree. On the right side cut 3.5" and 5.5" partial circles.

On the left side of the tree cut the second and forth section away from the tree at the fold line. On the right side of the tree cut the first and third section away at the fold line.

The remaining sections will be the garland. Fold them toward the tree and cut off the excess that extends beyond the tree. Punch the left and right sides of the garland with a Kreaxions 4-in-1 punch. Some punches will work better than others so test various punches to find the right combination for you!

 Fold the punched garland in toward the tree, adhere to lay flat.

For my card I used three different punches

 as well as three types of Kreaxions paper.
For the Green and White tree I used

Punch #909 and the Kreaxions Glitter Paper.
For the black and pink tree I used

 Punch #913 and the Duo Paper A5 Size.

For the purple and cream tree I used

 Punch #920 and the Kreaxions Sparkle Duo Paper.
